Biography:

Christy Moore, a native of Co. Kildare, Ireland, found fame as a member of the legendary tradition folk band Planxty. Since then he has carved out his own career as a consummate solo performer. In the 1980s Christy teamed up with Donal Lunny to form the innovative Moving Hearts.

Irish Ways and Irish Laws
Covered by Christy Moore and Moving Hearts I think it dates back to 1982.

Em D Em Bm
Once upon a time there was
Em Bm Em D
Irish ways and Irish laws,
Em D Em Bm
Villages of Irish blood
Em D Em Bm
Waking to the morning,
Em D Em
Waking to the morning.

.
Em D Em Bm
Then the Vikings came around,
Em Bm Em D
Turned us up and turned us down,
Em D Em Bm
Started building boats and towns,
Em D Em Bm
And tried to change our living,
Em D Em
They tried to change our living.

Em D Em Bm
Cromwell and his soldiers came,
Em Bm Em D
Started centuries of shame,
Em D Em Bm
But they could not make us turn,
Em D Em Bm
We are a river flowing,
Em D Em
We are a river flowing.

Em D Em Bm
Again, again the soldiers came,
Em Bm Em D
Burnt our houses, stole our grain.
Em D Em Bm
Shot the farmers in the fields
Em D Em Bm
Working for a living,
Em D Em
Working for a living.

Em D Em Bm
800 years we have been down,
Em Bm Em D
The secret of the water sound
Em D Em Bm
Has kept the spirit of a man
Em D Em Bm
Above the pain descending,
Em D Em
Above the pain descending.
Em D Em Bm
Today the struggle carries on,
Em Bm Em D
I wonder will I live so long
Em D Em Bm
To see the gates been opened up
Em D Em Bm
To people and their freedom,
Em D Em
To people and their freedom.

This is my interpretation of this song and not a cover version.
