Kyle Gass formed Trainwreck in 2002 after Tenacious D bandmate Jack Black had accumulated a busy film schedule. Gass selected JR Reed - who plays 'Lee' in the Tenacious D series - to become the lead singer of the new group. The duo decided to name themselves 'Klip Calhoun' and 'Darryl Donald' - and would focus on producing comedic southern rock music. After around a year of playing, the two decided that they needed a larger band.
